#Day 118: 27 April 2016

CHANGE, GOOD OR BAD?

I was helping a friend today, discussing and coaching the person on the intention to take a new role. Basically, she was lured into a situation where she is not sure if picking up the opportunity is a good thing for her or not.

I throw a few questions, which in general asking her "what actually you are looking for"

A career change? Higher salary? Higher responsibility? Higher learning? Or?

At first she said career change, but then unsure and think about higher salary, well basically she is unsure about the change. This sounded like a common problem for all of us.

A change, is it good or bad?

I believe change is inevitable. That in every journey of our life, we need to have a change, that change is actually part of our growth, and that, change is good.

But in life, we tend to stuck and blinded by comfort zones. Stuck in our own thinking and dimension that keeping us away from growth.

We forgot that only God never change, all others does. Hebrews 13:8 ESV - Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

That's what important in facing a change, that our heart and faith need to remain focus on the One that mever change. So we can put a clear priorities in our decision making towards changing something in our lifes, be it personal or professional lifes.

We need to fix our focus on Him and let the provider of wisdow guide us in walking through the change.

Jeremiah 29:11 ESV - For I know the plans I have for you, declares theLord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope

Change is good when you focus on God.

Another day full of change, full of blessing

FRAGILE

It was an interesting day.

After enjoying my lunch, I felt uneasy and had a pain on my left chest, well, where the heart is. I was concern on it as it is getting painful. I was not able to breath properly.

I decided to rush myself to the clinic and perform an ECG test.

Thank God, the heart beat is normal and the doctor said it was merely a muscle pain. Which I responded with amen.

I claim it and put my faith that it is okay! By the blood of Jesus. Amen. It struck my mind on how fragile we all are, human. How weak we are and how we have no control on our life.

Indeed, when something unexpected like that happens in our lives, it can make us realize how fragile life can be. And it can help us to put things into perspective and remember what really matters.

To tell the people that you love, how much they meant to you;
To smile to the noisy laughter from our children;
To make plans and visit our parents;
To give our very best to the people we work with;
And so on ...

It can remind us to live each day to its fullest…

Instead of “running around” and spending our time on things that don’t matter, it’s good to be reminded what a gift our life is. And how He wants us to use it–appreciating each moment and loving others the best that we can.

What a day full of blessing.

Psalm 39:5-6 - “…Each man’s life is but a breath.
Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro;
He bustles about, but only in vain…

DO NOT FORGET

I had a dinner with my former manager tonight. He was one of the good ones that I enjoyed working with through out our years of collaboration.

One of the topic of we talk about is how change is inevitable. That change is part of life and there is no other way other than facing the change then we can really test our endurance and grow.

I had great time hearing and talking about previous years of great work together. There are indeed good times, good learning, good challenges that we came across, that sticks to our heart, that touches our soul and makes us who we are. Some that we telling ourselves: Do not forget.

Psalms 103:1-2 NET reminded us saying, "Praise the Lord , O my soul! With all that is within me, praise his holy name! Praise the Lord , O my soul! Do not forget all his kind deeds!"

As we remember all the good experience, good learning, all the good things we are having, indeed, we should not forget Him. Because He is the provider of all kind deeds.

He is the provider of wisdom when we face trials. Apostle James also reminded us to not forget as he had reminded the earlier servants of God.

James 1:1-27 ESV - "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings. Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness  have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."

Do not forget those that helped us in our journey of life, those that taught us to be a better person;
Do not forget the teaching, the messages that brought us through the storm of life;
Do not forget Him, the provider;
Do not forget that He is always with us. Amen

And I say again, Do Not Forget.

Another day full of blessing.

STRENGTHEN YOUR ROOTS

STOP ASKING START TRUSTING

By: Shien Chang

There are lots of "why" in our lives. Why my work sucks, why that person did that to me, why my parents are like this and that, etc.

We seems to continue looking for the answer. What should I do? When it seems I am not able to know, understand what God's plan for us?

The fact is, we only know what is at lower dimension of knowledge. There is a limit to our level of knowledge. We only know what's on our level of competencies.

God's knowledge and work are too high for us to comprehend.

Proverbs 25:2 "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings".

Proverbs said even Kings still and need to search out a matter, and there are still things that are yet known, things that are conceal by God.

God does not need us to know, God need us to trust and believe

Psalms 42:1-12 - the heart that longing for God

"Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God"

Actually, most of the time, things that cause us demotivated and down are merely our questions, our own desire or ego to get the explanation.

"Actually we don't need explanation, we need strength. Actually we don't need to ask, we need trust"

Verse 11 - 12, the more you pursue answers fro. God, the more the bones felt pain. As the knowledge is just too wide for us to understand. But TRUST in the Lord, put HOPE in God.

Habakkuk 3:17-19 NIV Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord , I will be joyful in God my Savior.  The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.

Consider this, the lowest point or level of our faith is when we keep asking God, "why": As the answers will not help increase our faith.

Another powerful message. Another day full of blessing

STRENGTHEN YOUR ROOTS

Spiritual Development as Professional Development

When we talk about roots, it is always about foundation, inner strength. Roots speaks about growing within.

In professional life, it is like individual  development review.

Development review is focusing on the potential, the growth of an employee. Review should not be a yearly activity but as frequent as possible.

Similar to our spiritual life, we also need a kind of regular development review.

For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For each one shall bear his own load. Gal 6:3-5 (NKJV)

There are 4 pillars that we can learn from this verse, that Development (Improvement, Change) covers.
  • BE HUMBLE, though we might think that we have tons of experience, that we know stuff, that we are something. We are reminded that we might be deceiving ourselves.
    • Luke 14:11 ESV For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
    • Proverbs 11:2 ESV When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.

  • BE EXCELLENT, we need to continue to examine, review, to continuously improve our work, our service, our,... everything. There should never  be such thing as comfort zone. We need to always strive for improvement towards excellence:
    • Just like Daniel (Daniel 6:1-3), Then this Daniel became distinguished above all the other presidents and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him.
    • More than just excellence of skills, we also need to have excellence spirit
    • Colossians 3:23-24 - Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ

  • BE REJOICEFUL, in everything. Starts with small things, start with ourselves. Rejoice and respect and appreciate ourselves. Because only when we can accepts and appreciates our very self, then only we can trully rejoice
    • 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity

  • BE RESPONSIBLE, of our own load. Starts with small responsibility (take care of ourselves) and then we may be trusted with bigger responsibility (take care of others)
    • Responsible for our tasks, our work, our study, our health, etc - own it, be accountable for it

1 Samuel 16:7 ESV But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.

Heart means inner being, roots.

These pillars important for strengthening our inner being, our roots. Then the fruits of the strong roots will exploring out automatically.

TRIALS OF UPLIFTING

In any turbulences that we are facing, we don't need to ask "why God, why God". All we need to do is just "walk through it", as God is always with us. All these turbulences are part of our uplifting process.

That was what Robby were saying during tonight cell group. What a powerful message!! Coming from a man who were just mourning for his father few days ago.

I felt so small as I came to the group tonight with little bit down because of what happened at work and life.

But hearing these powerful messages I am really blessed. From a friend who just lost his father, from other that face a great challenge of recession at work, from the other sister that facing challenges as single mother and so on!

In every stories, where there are trials, everyone confirmed, there are blessing, a bigger blessing.

James 1:12 ESV - "Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."

"Just walk through it", stay steadfast, stay "Constance"! As God, Himself is steadfast.

From a tiring spirit, I am uplifted to stay steadfast, stay focus, stay humble, stay strong.

1 Peter 5:10 ESV - And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you

What a day of blessing!!

REMEMBER, IT IS FORMER WAY

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds —Ephesians 4:22-23

A lot of time, right after we attended a training or classes, especially a soft skills, motivational workshops, we feels like we are like a new creation.

We are full of spirit and trying to apply all the new skills, tips, learnings that we have just learned. But a lot of time, we fall into our old ways, our former way.

We forgot that we were taught to put off our oldself, to put off our former ways.

It is former, which means, something in the past. A history, something that already behind us.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

We need to throw the old ways, just like how we recycle our old clothing in order to get additional space for new ones

We need to erased the former habits, and replaced them with the new ones. Just like how we replace our old tires with the new ones for better performances and safety.

Remember, it is the old ways! Dont let them replace the new ones, the one we received from Christ.

Remember!

EXAMINE YOURSELF

2 Corinthians 13:5 ESV Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Who can know me other than myself (and God). Indeed, no one know ourselves best other than our own very self.

But, who can be the greatest deceiver? It is no other than our ownself as well! Leonardo Da Vinci once said "the greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions"

That is why Paul wrote to us in his last messages, asking us to examine ourselves, test ourselves.

In this uplifting year, there will be a lot of turbulences, a lot of challenges as well as a lot of opportunity. The message from Paul still valid for us, we need to always remind ourselves that Christ is in us, that we can handle and face, we can walk through all of the coming turbulences.

And with Him, we will be uplifted.

I need to remember this. To always check my heart, my opinions, on whether they are in His way, whether they are according to His law, whether I do everything for Him.

I need to continue to examine myself.

TEAM WORK

I just arrived home, it is 11pm now. Had a blast tonight at the Building Fund Raising meeting.

I am motivated again as I experienced what Team Work meant tonight. The project team is brilliant, loving, open for fresh challenges, high spirited, humble, talks about relevant focus with full of excellence service for God.

Perfect team, perfect team work.

Ephesians 4:16 ESV - "From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love"

I have full confidence that we will walk through the high and lows of the project for the next 3 years. But we all believe God is on our side, so what challenges can be againts us.

I can say tonight, with the spirit of a winning disciples, is the most productive meeting. We really look forward for the challenges, which creates hope and we look forward to see Jesus name glorified through out this project.

Each one of us, with our own flaws and strength are integrated in one body through Jesus Christ as the center of our focus.

Wow. I see how teamwork brings energy, how teamwork destroy the enemies, how teamwork enlarge our capacity and how teamwork increased our synergy.

Teamwork, is about us, is a must.

What a night full of blessing.

HUMILITY

1 Peter 5:6 ESV - "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you"

A short one today, I learned about humility from my boss, a VP yet also a humble lady.

Though she is a Vice President based on her role, she is very down to earth, which earned more of my respect.

My boss is visiting our site this week. I have booked a director room for her, with the objective to provide her with privacy and after all, she is a VP, someone that is up there!

But she showed me what it meant by humility, she politely refused to be seated in the director's room, instead she asked if there is empty seats nearby the team and simply crashed there.

I respect her for that. Now I felt awkward as I am still seating in my own office space. LoL, she told me I did the same when I was in Prague, seating together with the team and not asking for separate rooms. I guess we find our own way to respect each other.

Humility is not to be preached but to be acted

Luke 14:11 ESV - "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Ah, another day full of blessing. Love her and happy to have a boss like her.

STRENGTHEN YOUR ROOTS - WHICH ROOTS?

From him [Christ] the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work - Ephesians 4:16

It was indeed a week of sorrow, from the need to went through the difficult moment at work to the news of condolences for the lost of two of my friends mother and father.

Tonight, after attending the wake of Robby's father, I saw a great consolation, I saw how we all act as family, helping each other, offering our shoulders, our energy to help.

Strengthen your roots, which is our service theme for this quarter somehow crossed my mind tonight. Which roots?

I felt a great blessing tonight, where God answered my question. Which roots? Saturday night and again, tonight, I experienced the answer.

It is the roots of LOVE,w which God himself planted its seeds in each one of us.

Way before I am talking about other roots that helps me to grow, helps me to serve, helps me to pray. The roots of love, is the roots that held everything together.

The roots that held together few families to help selling at Lim Kok Wing while few others helping Robby and Veni.

The same roots of love that held together 10 youth members that drove back from Genting (Serving ER retreat) to serve at Family Sunday service.

The same roots of love that attended the wake tonight, supporting the family.

Colossians 2:7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

Ah, yesterday I called it a mourning week. No, I was wrong, it is actually a week full of blessing!

Thank you Jesus.

MOURNING WEEK

Isaiah 41:10 - Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

I am calling it, this is a mourning week for me.

My childhood friend, Derix's mom passed away earlier this week from a brain stroke.

Today, I received a shocking news that another friend of mine, Robby's dad passed away due to a heart attack.

I still can remember his wife voice when she called sharing the news to me and the look of the couple when I reached their house.

It is indeed a difficult week for me mentally while on appearences I still need to show the stronger me, smiling to colleagues, focus om giving the best to others at work.

But I know I am not alone. You Never Walk Alone, as Liverpool fans, I know we are not alone, God is with me in this difficult period.

I remember how God gave me strength through Psalm 46 when Elsye and I were going through difficult times carrying Constance:
  • 1 - God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
  • 11 - God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

I pray the same words can bring consolation to them. To the family that left behind.

I guess it is time to mourn. To let guard our emotions and release our heart to Him. And allow Him to fix us.

This is a week of mourning. God be with us.
My deepest condolences to my bro and sis Robby and Veni for the lost of Robby's father.

My deepest condolences for my bro Derix for the lost of his mother.

THAT DIFFICULT MOMENT

Philippians 4:6-7 ESV - Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus

I admit, I am anxious today. A lot of things going through my mind and they impacting my hearts and minds.

I mentioned about balance yesterday, balance of respect and result. Especially in my work, a balance of the organization need and employee's need. A lot of time I need to make these decisions.

I pray now, and surrender to God. And continue to put a great hope that God will continue to be part of these difficult decisions. And pray that the peace of God, that I strongly believe shall surpasses all my understanding.

I believe God will make a way. I believe that God will make everything right and beautiful according to His own time.

I pray God, let today be another day of blessing.

ABOUT BALANCE

Proverbs 11:1 ESV A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is his delight

I believe in everything that we do in life, there is always an element of balance.

In what we eat, we speak about the balance of protein, carbo, etc

In raising a child, a balance of discipline and freedom.

In a relationship, a balance of give and take.

At work, a balance of respect and result. Especially in my role, a balance of the organization need and employee's need.

Sometimes it is easier to say than do, most of the time I guess but I am reminded by His words:

Proverbs 16:11 ESV A just balance and scales are the Lord's; all the weights in the bag are his work

He is the Lord of balance and scales. To seek for Him is to find the right balance.

Seek and you will find, He said.

Ah, another day full of blessing.

STRENGTH

I can do everything through him who gives me strength —Philippians 4:13

I heard this verse a lot of times and most of those times I just focusing on the "can do everything" part. But today I want to reflect about strength, as I really need this to get through the storm in my life.

Strength means "the quality or state of being strong"

It is interesting to hear that strength is actually related to quality and as well as a state of being strong. And the quality itselves have a meaning of: an essential or distincrive characteristic or attributes

So in my own intepretation, the strength from God is not only about physical strength, but it is actually speaks about the quality of our distinctive characteristic or attribute that helps us to keep the state of being strong.

Only when we have the needful quality in our character, then we can do all things. And He as the provider, will help and provide us with these strong quality characteristics.

Wow, what a blessing. Thank you Jesus for the strength You have given to me. I need to use it and keep the state of being strong.

#Day 102: 11 April 2016

SPEAK AND SERVES

If I think about it, there are only 2 things that we actually do in our life: speaking and serving

Speaking as in expressing ourselves in order to deliver the message that we want others to understand, achieving goal that we want to achieve.

While serving, is the doing. The expressed action in translation of the words spoken. So, if we see it this way, this means every action that we do in life is a serving

I give you an example, when we want to eat, we speaks and express it by ordering food. The act of ordering the food is the act of serving the need of getting the food.

Same with eating, we "speaks" (read: express) ourselves by putting the food into our mouth, and the chewing and swallowing "serves" the hungry tummy.

And so on, and so on. So everything that we do in life, is indeed about speaking and serving.

1 Peter 4:11 - "If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen"

What a powerful message.

In everything we say, in every expression we made, every word we speaks, we should do as an expression of God's word.

And in every action we are taking, every serving we are doing, we should do it with the strength God provides.

With one purpose that we already know, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.

Am about to take a shower now and call it a day, serving my tired mind and body at best as they are God's creation.

Another day full of blessing.

Let us keep this in mind, that God is so good to us. He is faithful. So let us speaks and serves, at best, for the glory of His name.

#Day 101: 10 April 2016

CONSTANCE

Too emotional! I told myself. I should have focused on ER promo and not on the emotion! Those are the words that went through my mind after I finished my sharing. I was embarrased. And passed my apology to the team.

But the story of constance always shed tears in my eyes. The story of how God is indeed a loving God. Allow me to share it again as a reminder to all of us about how our God is a loving God.

It was in 2006, after 2 failed opportunity of becoming a parent, we received another chance, Elsye was pregnant. We were happy, we were hopeful.

It was a normal day and I was in office, presenting about work to some of my colleagues when my phone rangs. My wife was crying, loud, saying "there's blood...". She fell from a broken chair at home.

Like the fast and furious, I drove and reached home to see her laying at the floor, crying. We thought we lost the opportunity again. I carried her to our room and called the doctor which advised us to stay at home and rest, dont rush a shaken womb to hospital as it may make it worst, he said.

I tell you, when you are desperate, you will know how important to rely on God. So, we pray, we pray and we pray.

Psalms 46 is our strength at that time, it says

"
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"

We kept repeating the verses till we both tired and Elsye fell asleep. And in her sleep, God gave her a dream. In the dream, she saw her father carrying a baby, a baby girl.

(Remember that it was during 3rd month of pregnancy where we do not know what was the baby's gender)

Her father called the baby "Constance". Eslye woke up and share the dream with me. And i told her that is a good sign, that God may have trusted us with a baby, becoming a parents.

The blood stop and everything was good. When the pregnancy turns 5 months, the doctor told us that it's a she. So, without any doubts, we follow what was given for her name. We named her: CONSTANCE.

Constance, is derive from the word "constare" which means "to withstand", it also means "steadfast" or "constant":
  • To withstand: to stand up against : oppose with firm determination; especially : to resist successfully
  • Steadfastvery devoted or loyal to a person, belief, or cause:not changing
  • Constant: staying the same : not changing

I guess that is how God wants me (and all of us) to remember His everlasting love:
  • For us to resist succesfully all doubts
  • For us to devote and loyal to our faith
  • To not changing with our love towards Him

The same commitment and love that He have shown to me through Constance. His everlasting love, ever changing love, are always for us and with us.

I pray for God's help that everytime when I see Constance, let me always be reminded about the great love He have poured for us. Through my daughter, through Constance, the evidence of His love.

Ah, this is much better than my sharing this morning. I can write and express myself better. Less emotion :)

But I am happy. To be able to share and remind myself about God. And thankful of ER sessions that allows me to be reminded, again.

It is another day full of blessing.

#Day 100: 09 April 2016

ONE HUNDRED

(His Steadfast Love Endures Forever)

It is the 100 days.

Praise to Him in the highest place. I want to praise God for allowing me to reach 100 personal devotions. Although I know some writings may not be at best, I hope not just they blessed me in a special way, they also blessed others who read it as well.

It is beyond my imagination nor understanding, that I can reached the 100.

It's a mixed feeling. Great feeling because I am still on it! I am, with the guidance from Holy Spirit is still pushing on my resolution.

Not so great feeling because I feel that I am (still) not practicing what I have written. My spiritual self seems lack of growth. Slow.

Nevertheless, I want to confess and testify that His Steadfast Love Endures Forever!

Psalm 100 says - "Make a joyful noise to the Lord , all the earthServe the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord , he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations."

I thank You Lord, for everything that I have been through of the last 100 days. And I give You thank for the future days that You have prepared for me.

I am delighted! Thanks Jesus for the gift of 100!

I know Lord, the 100 is really a reflection that You are a living God. Without You, I would not experienced this milestone. And I really thank You for this. And I know, You will always be with me. You, are faithful God.

Another day full of blessing.
